By Spoon, from Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga.
They've been around since the mid 90's, but I only found them with this record a couple years back.
Propulsive acoustic guitar, then huge horns (like Simon & Garfunkel's "Baby Driver") and sleigh bells for the chorus and breaks. Great dynamics, raspy impassioned singing. What's not to like? A hard song to shake once it's in your head, but why would you want to?
"You got no time for the messenger,
Got no regard for the thing that you don't understand,
You got no fear of the underdog,
That's why you will not survive"

Leslie, I'm glad to see some indie music in your taste profile!
ReplyDeleteSpoon, from Portland, Oregon (as I recall) has a loyal following but has yet to make it to the big time.
My fav: Don't You Evah. If you haven't heard this one, take a listen. Addictive. One of those you just can't get out of your head. Now look what you've done to me. Think I'll sing it to myself...
Bet you got it all planned, right
Bet you never worry, never even feel a fright
Bet you got it all planned, right
Never fit to worry, never even feel a fright
I don't think I've ever even heard of them. Just goes to show you how little I know about contemporary music. If it isn't the latest by Lady Gaga, I generally don't have a clue! I pretty much stopped listening to contemporary music on the radio in the early nineties, when Grunge, Rap and that extremely sorry excuse for what replaced the older and far superior R&B, began to dominate the airwaves. Now those genres have for the most part gone by the wayside, and classic rock of the 60's, 70's and 80's seems to dominate the airwaves in this area.
ReplyDeleteThere is a lot of great new indie rock today, with a sort of neo-new wave thing going on, but because the youth of today don't listen to radio anymore, you have to know where to go online to get it, and of course you need a high speed internet connection and an I-pod or similar digital recording device. I have neither.
