Johnny Strikes Up the Band

By Warren Zevon.

The first track on his commercial breakthrough, Excitable Boy. This record holds a special place for me. It was the second album I ever owned, after Sgt. Pepper. It's a little more poppy and accessible than his debut, but still very dark in its content. This song serves as a hope-filled intro to an album featuring werewolves, headless Thompson gunners, rapists, and (eek!) lawyers.

"And Johnny is my main man,
He's the keeper of the keys,
He'll put your mind at ease,
He's guaranteed to please,
Back by popular demand"

  1. All hail the great Z.

My pea-sized teenage brain let the commercial success of what I felt to be a mediocre song (Werewolves...) ruin the rest of his work for me.

I then wasted 20 years not enjoying his work.

I came to my senses before he passed fortunately.

No surprise that you are a fan ...

  2. I confess to losing touch with Zevon after Mr. Bad Example, and arrived late for the end of life career resurgence. And there are still albums I haven't heard, like The Envoy, and Mutineer. I've hardly been a devout follower myself.

But the rewards offered are amazing.
