Liverpool Twofer

...and the Beatles are not within sniffing distance.

The Bangles' first LP All Over the Place included "Going Down to Liverpool", a cover of a Katrina and the Waves song.  It has a nice shuffle rhythm to it, and has always been my favorite Bangles song.  Susanna Hoffs got all the play as the cute Bangle, but I would take bass player Michael Steele all day.  She's on the far right in the car.

"In Liverpool" is from Suzanne Vega's fourth album, 99.9 F°.  The record was produced by Mitchell Froom, her then-husband.  The whole album bristles with metallic, brittle arrangements

Do you have a favorite producer?  Stupid as it sounds, I do: Mitchell Froom. Or maybe it's that he has produced so many of my favorite albums.  Chicken or egg?  He produced the first three Crowded House albums, three Ron Sexsmith albums, a bunch of Richard Thompson, Elvis Costello, Sheryl Crow, Randy Newman, The Bangles (though not the song here).  Consistently interesting, quirky production.

  1. I was always a fan of the Bangles' song 'This is Your Life' and Suzanne Vega was just a brilliant vocalist!

I did not know that they were produced by the same guy that did Crowded House!

I know exactly what you mean though, my own favourite act have very different sounds depending on producer. Trevor Horn is one of my favourites, I think he also produced Liza Minelli's album 'Results' but I could be making that up.

Thank you for the musical links!

  2. Yes, girlfriend, that is Leonard Nimoy. I sense his fee was about 90% of the video budget.

    1. Alas, my musical tecognition lags behind my visual recognition. Twas the Banderas that recorded 'This is Your Life'. No idea why I got that mixed up!

  3. I sense that the Beatles may be not that far away, since some seem to think the lyrics
    may relate to Lennon.

  4. You picked my favorite songs from both Miss Vega and The Bangles. "Going Down to Liverpool" never fails to induce goosebumps.

Also, if I remember correctly, Susannah Hoffs went to college with Leonard Nimoy's son, and that's how he wound up in the video. :c) More useless trivia from my weird brain. lol
