Hold On, Hold On

Neko Case, from Fox Confessor Brings the Flood.

I first heard Neko Case as a featured vocalist with The New Pornographers. I was dazzled. She's also got solo albums dating back more than a decade. This is from 2005, a flawless record.

A voice as big as all outdoors, in the service of great songs. Kind of a high octane version of Cowboy Junkies. There is a great concern for wildlife in her music, but it's not always on the surface of the lyrics. Some might call them inscrutable, but like so much of my favorite music, it gives up its secrets a little at a time with repeated listening. She's the real deal.

  1. Hmm... weird stuff happening. Picture and no sound. Tried it on Youtube with the same result.

Tried another video of the piece just to see if it was my computer and the sound was fine.

Thanks for the reference; it is always a treat to hear good music for the first time!

  2. I don't remember seeing anyone play a four string guitar, since Nick Reynolds of the Kingston Trio. And electric too!

  3. @ Halle -- Perhaps Youtube blocks A&E footage in Canada? I just hate anticanucktic behavior.

@ Melissa -- Good catch! I hadn't noticed that, and it's true in other footage as well. Ricky Wilson of the B-52's used to play a guitar with the middle two strings removed, but I haven't seen a real four-string before. Maybe that contributes to the uniqueness of Neko's sound.
